Diy hydronic radiant floor heating cost1/25/2024 Unless you’re building new construction and do it right, ie insulate from all sides and include it in the initial slab, retrofitting radiant in slab heating should be considered a luxury comfort, not an efficiency upgrade. In the northeast US where I live, an effectively insulated space can be heated efficiently by stove, or heat pump, or propane (depending on price). So really, you’re saying you want your cake and you want to eat it too- you want efficiency, and you want slab heating, and it just ain’t gonna happen. Even if you add pipes or coils somehow, that slab is unlikely to be insulated from underneath so much of your heat will be lost to the ground. From an electricity perspective it is more efficient to move heat than generate it.Īdding slab heating is just not going to be an affordable way to go. Heating with electric resistance wires or coils is quite possibly one of the most expensive ways to heat a home. Resistance heating is expensive in most places. Is it silly to mix the two?Īlso, is it wise to use a combination of floor heating + forced air + baseboard + IR (likely not all but. ![]() I hear that Hydronic is the most efficient but since the basement slab is already poured, I'm likely limited to electric radiant flooring down there (without reducing the height of the basement significantly) leaving me the option of hydronic upstairs only.Labor involved isn't the highest concern.I'll be doing the work myself as much as possible.Currently heated with Oil furnace (pretty expensive).I want to lay some floor heating but heating in general is new to me since I just moved from a year-round hot state (low of 70) to one with mild winters (occasionally below freezing). Room by room I'm demoing my house, down to the studs, and could use some advice.
